The Heroin Diaries
I tend
to not read books like The Heroin Diaries. I prefer to read books that are more
fiction. I find it hard to read autobiographies. They don’t paint a picture in
my head and in return I can’t remember what I just read. With The Heroin Diaries,
it’s just interesting enough that I can stand to read it. It does take me
longer, but Nikki Sixx was smart to journal everything in his drug abuse stage
of life. Most people would rather pretend that the bad time in their life didn’t
happen. He embraces it and helps with basically telling people why they shouldn’t
do drugs. I really like that when something doesn’t make complete sense, either
he or someone who knew him back then will help clarify. Even if it’s something
as little as not knowing the whole story.
One
part that really stuck out at me was when his sister wrote in the book. “Nikki
became my hero when he saved me from a big rattlesnake” (Page 37). All we
really read about in the book was how much he abused drugs. When his sister
wrote in it, she told about the more caring side of Sixx. She talked about how
much fun they used to have. It’s like when you know someone for years and then
someone from their past comes and tells you things that they used to do. They
can seem like a completely different person and it’s all because of what was
happening in their life back then versus what is happening in their life now.
I've always been able to understand autobiographies a lot more than fiction books for some reason. It's good that you can understand this autobiography though, because it's a really good concept to grasp, and overall is an amazing book. I agree with you about how it's interesting and likable when something doesn't make complete sense to him, and when people had to help fill in the gaps throughout the book so far. It helps Nikki bring other people into the light who were a part of his life during that time, and it also brings other characters into the book so it's not just him writing throughout the entire autobiography. I think that the quote you included in the blog was a big indicator that Nikki has not just been a drug addict throughout his life, but he's been in one of the most successful rock bands ever, and he is a hero.
ReplyDeleteI also don't like autobiographies so I didn't think I'd enjoy reading this book as well. I guess I don't necessarily enjoy it because of how morbid it is, but I think it's interesting and I'm also glad that he decided to document it. It helps give me a sense of what it's like to be on drugs and it makes me not want to do drugs more than I already didn't want to. He's a wreck and it's saddening. Also I like the point you made about how his sister said those things about him. All we really know about Nikki is that he abuses drugs, sleeps around with women all the time, he hides in his closet, and he's an asshole about 97% of the time. But the way his sister talks about him makes it seem like there was and could potentially be so much more of Nikki than what we're being showed in his diary and I think that's really sad.
