The Suspense Is Too Real
The suspense in the last two sections have been unreal. I
couldn’t put the book down. I read farther than I had to without even realizing
it. The suspenseful moments were drawn out but weren’t drawn out too far where
you started to feel like it was just going on and on.
I liked how the first gate was a movie that you had to act
out. It was a very original thought. Wade’s research all about the things that
Halliday loved really paid off for it. If he hadn’t watched that movie repeatedly
because it was mentioned in Anorak’s Almanac, he probably would’ve taken a
while to finish the gate and then would’ve lost first place. Another thing I
liked was when Morrow said “It had become a self-imposed prison for humanity” when
he was talking about the OASIS. That is one of the truest sentencing in the
book so far. The whole world was falling apart but people didn’t seem to care
because they have their version of utopia. Why worry about what’s going on in
the real world when you can escape to the OASIS? I was routing for Art3mis and
Wade to get together and I was to happy when it seemed like they did. After
that, I knew something was going to happen to cause them to break up. Of course
Wade ruined it by saying I love you to her. Just the guy thing to do. I can’t
wait to finish this book and find out who wins the egg and what will happen to
Wade.
Cline really did do a great job in creating a book that was hard to put down. Usually there are slow spots in books that will create easy stopping points, but there really are no "slow spots" once you get past the first few chapters. I was also impressed with the originality of a lot of the parts in the book, including the scene in the first gate you descried. I also like how you mentioned how much Wade had watched WarGames in order to pass the gate. The amount of knowledge the top gunters have about 80's culture and references is mind numbing. For the average person, the egg hunt seems almost impossible because of the amount of video game skill, problem solving, and random memorization needed.
ReplyDeleteOne of an author's most challenging tasks in some respect is being able to keep a reader's attention throughout their piece of work. I think that Cline has taken this challenge head on and done a great job overcoming it. I agree that Wade and Art3mis' relationship was predictable, and I'd be willing to predict that even though they broke up they'll end up getting back together. I think it was clear that Art3mis had feelings for Wade but she just wanted to prioritize the egg. Maybe once the egg is found they'll get back together! I'm excited to see how Cline finishes out the novel with only 100 pages left.
