Is The End Ever Really The End?

Finishing the chapters of Ready Player One, I was looking forward to finding out who would win the egg. However, I didn’t want the book to end. The last chapters were intriguing and hard to put down. When they discovered that Og was watching them in the basement while being invisible, I can honestly say that I saw that coming. Earlier in the book when the comic books fell over, they thought it was a glitch in the system. I had this lingering feeling that someone was watching them. I didn’t know if it would be someone on their team like Og or if Sorrento had somehow been able to spy on them in there. I was happy that Og had been watching and let them all come to his house for the big battle.

When Wade went to meet Aech, I didn’t suspect that he would end up being a she. I thought it was a great plot twist and made me want to laugh out loud. Wade was so cool about it and that’s what I like about his character. He’s so open minded about things. I kept waiting for him to meet Art3mis AKA Samantha but I figured it wouldn’t be until the very end. They had to get on with the fight and destroy Sorrento. The fight with Sorrento was crazy. Reading it, I could picture the giant robots and the little avatars trying to destroy the enemy. I think Shoto thought of sacrificing himself for the rest of them as the honorable thing to do. He knew he wouldn’t make it most likely, but he did it for his friends.

I thought the way Cline let Parzival have a second life because he obtained that quarter was a real head turner. However, letting him use the help of his friends via commlink was cool. He could do the third gate by himself but he had his friends there unlike the other two gates. After he beat the gate and got the egg, he got to have a conversation with Halliday. The fact that Halliday created a big red button to shut down the OASIS was amusing. The typical big red button they use in movies. After logging out of the OASIS, Wade went to look for Samantha. I was so excited for them to meet in real life. “It occurred to me then that for the first time in as long as I could remember, I had absolutely no desire to log back into the OASIS”. I feel that him meeting Samantha and getting to kiss her was the perfect ending to this book.

  1. In your first paragraph where you were talking about a glitch in the system I did not make that connection with that being Og. This part of the book really did take a big turn with Aech actually being a girl, that completely caught me off guard also, Sorrento was a definitely a dick. The ending of this book was as good as it could have been. I think it was great to hear that quote from Wade because that is coming a long way for him since the beginning of the book.

  2. When the comic books got knocked over while all the gunters were having their meeting, I didn't think it was a glitch, but I definitely thought it was Sorrento as well instead of Og. It's good that it didn't end up being Sorrento, though, otherwise he could've found out a lot of useful information that was definitely not for him to know. I also have to agree that I love Wade's personality, and the way he looks at ever situation, because even in negative situations he somehow tries to make everything a positive. I really did not see it coming that Aech was a girl, that most likely would've been my last guess if you were to ask me about a crazy plot twist in the novel. It's a shame that racism and sexism still stands even in the future, though, and that those were some of her reasons for creating herself as a boy avatar. I'm surprised she never told Wade, her best friend, but I guess it's better that she waited until they actually met face to face. I also couldn't agree with you more that Samantha and Wade meeting was the best possible ending for the book. It left me wanting to read more, but unfortunately there was no more to read. I think that the big red button also left some room for a sequel to this book, although I feel like that would have to focus on their real world instead of the virtual OASIS.
