First 99 Pages of Ready Player One

Starting Ready Player One, I wasn’t sure if I would like the book or not. After a few pages in, I was instantly hooked. I really connected to the way the book was written. There weren’t long boring paragraphs that just casually described things. The text made you feel like you were in the story. If the rest of the book is as thought-provoking as the first 99 pages, I’m ecstatic to read more.

I thought that it was funny how even when the world was basically in shambles, they still make kids go to school. You would think that they would want to make them start working so that they don’t have to have teachers and schools around. I think it was cool that they let some people start to go to school in the OASIS. Then people like Wade who didn’t have anything, could still go to school without worrying about how to get there. He had a good attitude about going to a new school. He even figured out how not to deal with bullies. “At this school, the only real weapons were words, so I’d become skilled at wielding them.” The way he talked to Aech was similar to the way that someone would talk to a best friend that they’ve known for life. They didn’t care if they hurt each other’s feelings. It was almost comical to read. The way that Wade talked about Halliday, it was obvious that he idolized him. He spent his free time looking up miscellaneous facts about him. It’s inspiring that even though Wade didn’t have any family that cared for him, he still managed to get by. I think he was able to do that because of his strong interest in Halliday. His idol inspired him in every way that an idol should.

  1. The book does seem to just draw you into the story. It just paints out Wade’s life in a realistic and truthful way. The language Wade uses to describe everything is almost exactly how real high school student would say it. Although I don’t think Wade idolized Halliday, at least not in the beginning. I think that Wade was very similar to everyone else when the Egg Hunt started. The mind-boggling prize, the competition, and just the way to use it to escape even further from reality is what I think drew Wade in. However, I think at some point he did start idolizing Halliday. The way Wade talks about him, completely indicates it. I just wonder, will Wade still idolize Halliday or maybe get a bit resentful as the story goes on?

  2. For me, I was not instantly hooked like most people are saying, but everyone is different with their own opinions. As in mine, I felt like the beginning was kind of boring because there was a lot of paragraphs that had long descriptions of everything. Though, after reading a good portion of the first assigned reading, I did find myself liking the book. Even as to where I had gone past the second reading assignment, which I rarely do. I am not much of a reader. Also, I did not feel as if Wade really idolized Halliday, in my opinion of course, I thought it was more of an attraction to finding the egg. Meaning, Wade has to and needs to know every aspect of Halliday’s life in order to complete the final quest that Halliday had secretly made.
