Death Note- Part 1
The
writing style of Death Note is new for me. I have never read a manga or even
seen one in person. It was a little hard trying to read it at first. My eyes
kept trying to read from left to right or I’d read a panel out of order. Once I
finally got the hang of reading it correctly, I’m intrigued by this book.
The
beginning of the book was a little out there for me at first. I couldn’t understand
why Ryuk would randomly get up and say how he dropped his notebook in the human
world. As I read on, I understood that he must get very bored as a death god.
To live for so long with not much to do. As for Light finding the notebook, I
knew he’d be skeptical on whether it would work. When he discovered that it did
work, he didn’t stop. Because at first he felt bad about whether he should use
it, I feel like the book is almost influencing him. He does things that you
wouldn’t think that he would do and he has this almost evil face. For being how smart he is, he’s good about
thinking his plans through. He makes these assumptions that someone’s going to
do something and he’s typically right. It does help that his father is the NPA’s
chief detective. “Your dad’s the chief of detectives, so you can use him to
find out what the cops know” (Page 114). Having all that knowledge of the
people trying to catch you is a huge advantage. I’m excited to read what other mischief
Light will cook up.
I felt the same way at first when I started reading this book, I had no idea what was going it was just so different. It became a lot easier the farther I read. I could not imagine being so bored for so long, I cannot stand not doing anything. I like how Ryuk dropped the book just to see what would happen. I also think the book is influencing him a lot of different ways, and as much as Light has shown us he is not very good at processing between right and wrong. I believe that Light thinks his actions are justified even though that is not the case.
ReplyDeleteI have also never read a manga before, and I was thrown off having to read from right to left. Though I was skeptical at first, I am actually enjoying Death Note. The illustrations provided by the manga genre help bring the novel to life, and I think the plot is quite interesting. Though I was confused at some points, I was overall able to comprehend the concepts better than I expected to. I do not know if I would say the book is influencing Light, but I do believe that the Death Note is a gateway for him to express his psychotic tendencies. Light seemed to be normal at first, but once he revealed how many people he killed so quickly, it became apparent to me that Light is certifiably insane. Though Ryuk is a Death God, it seems as though Light believes he now holds that position instead. As the novel progresses, I wonder if Ryuk and Light’s relationship will flourish or fold because of Light’s intense desire to kill.
